Tableau – Publishing Without Authentication

Can Tableau Publish Content Without Authentication?

Yes — Tableau can publish content that does not require authentication, but only under specific configurations.

1. Tableau Public — No Authentication Required

If your goal is to publish dashboards that anyone on the internet can view with zero login, then Tableau Public is the native option.

What it allows

  • Dashboards are fully public
  • No authentication required
  • Can be embedded in websites, blogs, etc.

Limitations

  • Data must be fully public
  • No row-level security
  • No sensitive or internal corporate data
  • No control over who views the dashboard

2. Tableau Server / Tableau Cloud (Server) — “Guest Access”

If you want unauthenticated access inside your own network or controlled environment, Tableau Server has a setting called Guest User Access.

What it allows

  • Users can view dashboards without logging in
  • Can be used internally for non-sensitive content
  • Embeddable in internal sites (SharePoint, portals, Confluence, etc.)

Requirements

  • Your Tableau Server admin must:
    • Enable “Enable Guest User” in Authentication settings
    • Ensure “Embedded Credentials” are used in the data source
    • Assign permissions to the Guest user for specific projects

Limitations

  • Only available on Tableau Server, not Tableau Cloud
  • Still requires the viewer to access via allowed network/URL
  • Guest user permissions are relatively coarse-grained

3. Tableau Cloud (formerly Tableau Online)

Tableau Cloud does not allow anonymous access.

There is no guest user in Tableau Cloud.

Key Considerations for No-Auth Dashboards

Option Authentication Data Sensitivity Notes
Tableau Public None (open Internet) ❌ None allowed Best for blogs, public data
Tableau Server Guest User None (within allowed network) ✔ Low–Medium Admin must enable; uses embedded credentials
Tableau Cloud Authentication required n/a No anonymous/public access supported

Summary

  • Yes, Tableau can publish “no login required” reports if:
    • You use Tableau Public, or
    • You enable Guest Access on Tableau Server
  • No, if you are using Tableau Cloud and want public/anonymous access.
